So, as a Louth family photographer one of my main aims for 2017 is to encourage mums to be in photographs. It sounds really simple, don’t you think? In some ways you would expect so, but for lots of different reasons, mums seem to shy away from the camera. And if I’m honest, I have been guilty of this too!
Back in Autumn of 2016, a mum’s post went viral. You are likely to have come across it. It suggested to all dads to just ‘take the photo’. Don’t think about it, just do it. It was a message that stemmed from the heart of the writer. A daughter who had lost her dad and who realised that actually, he wasn’t in many of the photos, because he was the one who had taken them. This message really struck a chord with me, especially as I am usually the one in our family to take the photographs!
Behind the camera…
I much prefer to be behind the camera, taking the photograph (hence why I love my job so much!) But I’ve noticed that when I look back at my family photographs, I’m not in many of them at all. Just a couple of holiday snaps! Now my son is 18, he’s planning his ventures and I feel like I’ve missed the boat! Don’t get me wrong, I know I can encourage him to have a photo shoot with me anytime, but I really wish I had done so when he was younger. And not just once – I wish I had created myself an opportunity to have several family sessions, so I could see how we all grew old so quick! Instead, I kept saying “I’ll book that in for next Summer, when the weather is better” but life got in the way and now he’s grown up.
So, my message to all mums out there….
Firstly, if you are thinking of booking a photography session, don’t wait until the “right” time, just get it booked in. I may be a Louth family photographer, but I’m a mum too and I know just how quickly time flies by. Life will always be busy when you’ve got a family. So, just add it to the calendar as you would any other family activity.
And secondly, get in them photographs! Don’t worry if you don’t look your best, its often more about how you feel than look anyway. And if you feel happy, then that will be captured in your photographs. Your children will want to see photographs of you with them. They want to look back and remember fun family times, and photographs help to bring you back to that particular time.
So go on, be brave!
Worry not about laughter lines, a little baby weight, or tired eyes. They all help to tell your story. Whether you plan to have a professional photography shoot at a studio, location you love, or if you just plan to be more open to getting in on them family shots on holiday, make sure you enjoy recording those memories.
I’ve a feeling this 2017 aim will be more of a longer term mission as it’s something I know I should have done and that’s why I am offering a fabulous 10% off my family* studio and location sessions, or any session that mum agrees to be in on too 🙂 You’ll thank me later down the line, or at least, your children will!
*Only applies to studio/location photography sessions and not wedding bookings!
