Don’t panic, I’ve got things covered!
Worried your newborn baby won’t settle at your Newborn Photography Session? This is such a common concern amongst my ‘new parent’ clients. And I can completely see why you might worry. However, your newborn photographer will have been trained to work with babies that just aren’t quite as keen on being sleepy and content as we might like them to be.
Your newborn baby might be unsettled for a number of reasons. It might be that extra winding is needed. Or a top up of milk. Maybe they are overly tired and want some comfort. Or it could be that they are just that bit more curious!! Whichever reason it might be, your photographer will have a skill or trick to help.
As well as baby safety, I learnt lots of useful extras in my original training. And at my top up training sessions too. So I’ve refined these skills over time and find that more often than not, there’s a way to work with your newborn no matter if they sleep or stay awake.

So, if your newborn baby won’t settle then my tricks include:
Cosy and snug:
My lovely cosy studio is like home from home. And this works perfectly. It means that I can control the warmth better. If you have chosen to have certain newborn shots, then my studio needs to be that bit warmer than normal.
Settled:
I’m sure throughout your pregnancy you’ll have heard of white noise. You’ve probably read about it in books or had other parents tip you off! White noise can really help your baby settle, so I’ve invested in a little ‘shusher’ gadget! I imagine they fly off the shelves. And most parents leave the studio having ordered one online!

Curious:
In my experience, even at a few days old, your newborn already has personality. Every newborn baby is different. Some love cuddles. Some love being snuggled. Lots love sleep. Others are more curious. But whichever your little one is, there’s always a way to make sure that personality is captured.
Time:
For me, I choose to only book one newborn session in per day. I allow for 2 to 4 hours for each session, just so we can make sure that we don’t feel rushed to settle baby. My newborn photography sessions are baby led. So we work together with what and how they are feeling.
And if, even after all of these tricks, baby won’t settle, then it might be that we simply have to rearrange the session for another day of the week. And because this doesn’t happen terribly often to me, I don’t charge extra for this additional session.
Hopefully this blog post will have alleviated any worries or concerns you migth have about your newborn’s photography session. If you’ve any other ideas, then I’d love to hear them.
Smile, Jeni x
